After completing their materiality assessment, our client - a large holding company – faced a complex challenge: collecting, cleaning, standardising, and automating ESG data across all subsidiaries to create a compliant, unified report. With 79,000 employees across 1,300 sites in over 100 countries, this global logistics leader faced a challenge: their emission tracking tools were outdated, unreliable, and hard to maintain. Facing new regulatory requirements, the client needed a robust, extendable, and auditable emission tracking application. That’s where Netlight came in. We partnered with the client to build a industry-leading emission calculation. Our journey began with a deep analysis of existing solutions and an exploration of upcoming regulatory hurdles. From there, we defined a clear vision and defined a extensible, auditable architecture. The final solution combined GPS data, vehicle information, freight details, and routing information to deliver precise CO2 calculations across sea, air, and road transport. This not only met regulatory demands but set a new standard for high-precision emission tracking in the logistics industry.

Reducing green hydrogen cost with Machine Learning

A Swedish industrial company, committed to transforming the steel industry with green hydrogen, took on an ambitious project: building an integrated plant for hydrogen, iron, and steel production – featuring one of the world’s largest hydrogen plants. But with electricity as the biggest cost factor in green hydrogen production, they needed an innovative solution to optimise energy expenses. Enter Netlight. Our team of Data Scientists and ML Engineers collaborated with the client to explore how Machine Learning and Advanced Analytics could unlock smart energy trading. Together, we evaluated business cases, tested technical feasibility, and developed prototypes using advanced ML models. These simulations predicted electricity market trends – spot prices and balancing market developments – to optimise energy purchases and significantly reduce costs. This collaboration not only helped manage expenses but also brought the company one step closer to revolutionising sustainable steel production.

However, as the client relied on external service providers for all digital products, optimising for Sustainable IT was beyond their control. Additionally, the outdated tech stack made it difficult to attract developers, and siloed product development compromised efficiency. Netlight re-architected their systems following Green Software principles while using popular technologies with modern Cloud infrastructure. The technology update and strong focus on sustainability enhanced the client's job market appeal and increased IT agility. We helped build an internal team, gradually taking over development. Sustainability was established as core pillar of the development cycle, leading to optimisations through virtualisation, serverless computing, and static-site generation.
