Inspiring change through a greenfield approach to e-commerce platform development

One of Norway's largest publishers develops, disseminates, sells, and distributes knowledge, culture, and reading experiences. Due to high maintenance costs associated with their existing e-commerce platform, the publisher struggled with a tightly coupled backend and frontend, making it expensive to introduce new features. With 80% of resources dedicated to maintaining a monolithic structure with aging technology and escalating complexity, their capacity for innovation was severely limited.

Netlight became a key partner in driving modernisation. Working closely, we designed and implemented a Proof of Concept (PoC) for a new platform leveraging composable architecture. Unlike the legacy system, this new approach utilised Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) products, freeing up resources previously blocked by time-consuming maintenance. Beyond its core impact, the project served as a lighthouse initiative for other teams and stakeholders, inspiring them to adopt cross-functional, empowered teams and fostering closer collaboration.

Creation of a dynamic pricing engine for the launch of a car sharing service

Germany's leading actor in the car rental business, which operates globally and is considered one of the largest in its space, has Netlight as one of its longest-standing partners. Pricing managers had difficulty setting prices because of the many factors involved, such as vehicle type, pick-up and drop-off locations, and the time of day.

Netlight developed a low-latency, highly scalable software to generate pricing quotes based on a complex pricing model. We also added a machine learning layer to compare the revenue generated by AI-based pricing with the standard model across different locations and times. Together, we rolled out across Germany and five other countries, scaling the shared fleet from 700 to 25,000 vehicles, including scooters, mopeds, and bikes. Pricing managers now manage complex pricing rules more efficiently, saving significant time. Machine learning-driven pricing is also expected to boost revenue over time, with 2.5 million rides taken using their car-sharing platform in 2021 alone.

Sustaining rapid growth of a bank through modernization and innovation

Netlight collaborated with an innovative German investment bank to prepare its IT landscape for rapid growth of its banking-as-a-platform business. Working closely with teams around the core banking system, Netlight consultants systematically identified, visualised, and prioritised performance bottlenecks and obstacles that hinder business scaling. Throughout the partnership, we developed strategies to address these issues, either by refactoring existing system components or completely redesigning business processes. This included re-engineering components identified during architecture and business analysis and updating the underlying architecture to support scalable data processing paradigms using modern, best-in-class technology.

As a result of this collaboration, several critical performance bottlenecks were removed. The core banking system and the surrounding IT landscape is continuously being modernised. Over the past four years, enabled by the underlying technology stack and platform, the investment bank has increased its accounts under management more than 33-fold.
